Today’s World Wealth Report from Capgemini shows that times have never been better for the world’s wealthiest - since 2009 more than 4.5 million new millionaires have been created, rising to a total of 15.4 million millionaires across the world last year. Yet while the wealthy prosper, 702 million people living in extreme poverty are being left behind.

Research published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists today shows that multinational corporations are using the tax haven of Mauritius to avoid paying millions of dollars of tax across Africa.

More than 300 leading economists from 30 countries have today written to world leaders warning that there is no economic justification for allowing tax havens to continue, and urging them to bring an end to offshore financial secrecy. The letter comes ahead of the UK Government’s summit on offshore corruption in London on Thursday, which politicians from 40 countries as well as World Bank and IMF representatives are expected to attend.

G7 finance ministers must adopt strong commitments to tackle extreme inequality, said Oxfam today ahead of a G7 Finance Ministers meeting in Chantilly, France on 17 – 18 July.  The meeting is being held ahead of a G7 Heads of State Summit in Biarritz, France at the end of August.
