Oxfam water engineers are having to drill deeper, more expensive and harder-to-maintain water boreholes used by some of the poorest communities around the world, more often now only to find dry, depleted or polluted reservoirs. 

The EU position on climate finance for the Paris climate summit was adopted today by the EU Finance Ministers. New figures released by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) show that the number of hungry people has risen for the third year in a row, mainly as a result of conflict and the climate crisis. However, despite the spiralling hunger and two global food price crises in a little over ten years, hunger has fallen off the political agenda.

The amount of money needed for UN humanitarian appeals involving extreme weather events like floods or drought is now eight times higher than 20 years ago — and donors are failing to keep up, reveals a new Oxfam brief today. For every $2 needed for UN weather-related appeals, donor countries are only providing $1.

Paris has been a landmark agreement, but it won’t be the last. The political world is waking up to what a transition away from fossil fuels looks like. But it has only started to understand the scale of the challenge to adapt to the impact of climate change on our food system, our humanitarian system, our economies and ultimately the livelihoods of hundreds of millions around the world. For the world’s poorest and most vulnerable, the struggle for climate justice continues. 

Ethiopia is facing a massive drought and food insecurity crisis. The impact of failed rains and droughts have been worsened by the 2015 El Niño. Urgent humanitarian action and long-term investment is needed so that communities can become more resilient and reduce their vulnerability to weather events in the future.

Long-term approaches to reduce food insecurity must be found, and climate change, which is super-charging the effects of El Niño, must be tackled at the UN climate conference in Paris and beyond.
