G20 countries are receiving $136 million every day in debt repayments from the world’s poorest countries at a time when up to 828 million people are facing hunger.

The rights and technical capacities of indigenous peoples and smallholder farmers are the focus of the three-year global program, ‘Putting lessons into practice: Scaling up People’s Biodiversity Management for Food Security’. This briefing draws on the program’s results to suggest a global framework and six pathways for scaling up.

In response to the Food and Agriculture Organization’s announcement that global food prices slightly decreased last month, Oxfam’s policy advisor Luca Chinotti said: 

"The needs of the poorest were an afterthought. Despite the anger of many on the streets at the growing divide between the rich and poor, the G20 could only muster a tepid set of policies to tackle poverty and inequality," said Steve Price-Thomas, Oxfam’s director of advocacy and campaigns.

In reaction to today’s announcement at the G7 in Biarritz of a new partnership on the Sahel region led by France and Germany, Oxfam’s spokesperson, Robin Guittard, made the following statement:

Oxfam is prepared for a major disaster response in the Philippines after Cyclone Hagupit was upgraded to a Super Typhoon – the same classification as Typhoon Haiyan – which wrought destruction on the country a year ago.

Oxfam has distributed emergency supplies to survivors of Cyclone Idai in Nsanje district, one of the worst hit areas in the southern tip of Malawi, and in camps in Buzi near the city of Beira in Mozambique.
