The world can halve global hunger within five years says a new Oxfam report launched today. The launch of the report coincides with an announcement by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization that the number of hungry people worldwide has dropped to 925 million in the past year.

The combined wealth of the richest 1 percent will overtake that of the other 99 percent of people next year unless the current trend of rising inequality is checked, Oxfam warned today ahead of the annual World Economic Forum meeting in Davos.

Responding to news of the $4.5 billion pledge made by the G7 leaders to tackle global hunger, Max Lawson, Head of Inequality Policy at Oxfam said: ‘Faced with the worst hunger crisis in a generation, the G7 have simply failed to take the action that is needed.
