Two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5, struck Venezuela on 24 June 2026, followed by more than 1,000 aftershocks. This emergency compounds an already complex humanitarian crisis: As of early 2026, an estimated 7.9 million people required humanitarian assistance.

A new Oxfam report today says that as many as 11 people are likely dying of hunger and malnutrition each minute. This is more than the current global death rate of COVID-19, which is around seven people per minute. The report, ‘says that conflict remains the primary cause of hunger since the pandemic, pushing over half a million people into famine-like conditions ―a six-fold increase since 2020.

The fortunes of Latin America’s 73 billionaires surged by $48.2 billion since the beginning of the pandemic even as the region buckles as one of the worst-hit regions in the world, said Oxfam today. 

As many as 12,000 people could die per day by the end of the year as a result of hunger linked to COVID-19, potentially more than could die from the disease, warned Oxfam in a new briefing published today. The global observed daily mortality rate for COVID-19 reached its highest recorded point in April 2020 at just over 10,000 deaths per day.

Due to the increasing complexity of Venezuela’s political conflict, in the midst of an important social and economic crisis, Oxfam calls on all the actors involved to take the following points into account.
