Deadly floods and landslides have already killed over 300 people and forced over 12 million more from their homes, as the disaster continues to rip through South Asia. During the past few days, India, Nepal, and Bangladesh have experienced some of the worst floods in years threatening millions more. Oxfam says the situation is likely to get worse over the coming days.

Before the opening of the Committee on Food Security’s annual meeting in Rome (7 October), Oxfam called for Governments to ensure that biofuel policies do not force poor farmers off their land and fuel food price spikes.

Poor countries are being forced to cut back on their economic crisis-response spending too soon. Education and social protection budgets are particularly badly affected. Oxfam is calling on the IMF to take steps to reverse this trend.

More than two years on from the escalation of the war in Ukraine, women and girls’ humanitarian needs remain unmet. The gendered impacts of the war are being overlooked, pre-existing gender-based inequalities are being exacerbated and Women’s Rights and Women-Led Organizations (WROs/WLOs) are being largely excluded from the humanitarian coordination, decision making and funding systems in Ukraine. 

Cutting development aid costs lives, and it will exacerbate poverty, inequality and instability across the globe, said Oxfam today in response to the publication of new aid figures by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
